THE JOB
Assistant Project Manager candidates are entry to mid-level individuals with an educational background in construction, accounting and/or business with field experience. The Assistant Project Manager position will have to opportunity to gain in-depth experience with on-site and office construction management. The position places an emphasis on learning multiple aspects of heavy civil construction management at Burns Dirt, fully integrating candidates in multiple aspects of operations. Candidates will be equipped through 1 on 1 training opportunities with skills in leadership, management, and business relationships. Once a candidate reaches a proficient level in this role, there is a pathway within the company to pursue higher level estimating, preconstruction planning, project management, and operations. The Assistant Project Manager will report to a member of the Senior Project Management team.

 RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Review and understand project plans, specifications, and site conditions for estimate preparation.

  • Prepare accurate quantity takeoffs.

  • Accurately utilize project plans and specifications to identify scopes of work, assign crews, schedules, materials, and subcontracting opportunities.

  • Communicate project bid requirements to material suppliers and subcontractors for quotation.

  • Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.

  • Work with Project Superintendents and Foremen to plan and organize activities relating to roadway and site construction projects.

  • Monitor projects through Project Superintendent to ensure project is completed on schedule and within budget.

  • Negotiate revisions, changes, and additions to contractual agreements with clients, suppliers, and sub-contractors.

  • Prepare phase and resource planning, create, and negotiate schedules.

  • Confer with supervisory personnel to ensure all matters such as work procedures, complaints, and construction problems are resolved.

  • Evaluate weekly construction methods and determine cost-effectiveness and discuss any concerns with Project Superintendent.

  • Formulate reports based on marked-up plans showing work progress, costs, and scheduling.

  • Prepare and transmit submittals (materials, vendors) to client for approval.

  • Manage and approve subcontractor and supplier invoices, create, and submit monthly pay applications.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years field experience or

  • 2 years field experience and a post-secondary degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, Accounting, or other relevant program.

  • Equivalent military experience will be considered.

  • Familiarity with Mississippi DOT and Alabama DOT standard specifications.

  • Software experience with Trimble Business Center and Microsoft Office.

  • Well organized, detail oriented, and ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work in team environment.

  • Sense of urgency and the ability to multi-task.

  • Highly productive and willing to manage a busy work schedule independently.

  • Familiarity with requirements of drawings and specifications and with terms and conditions of contracts and purchase orders.

  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Currently Burns Dirt operates within a 150-mile radius of its home office in Columbus, Mississippi. Intermittent day travel is to be expected depending on location of project.
